  • Q*Bird’s Falqon MQS4000 enables scalable, multipoint quantum key distribution.
  • Tested on SURF’s network, it strengthens protection against quantum computer threats.

What happened: A new era in scalable quantum key distribution

Q*Bird has introduced its Falqon MQS4000 Quantum Switch, a breakthrough in scalable multipoint quantum key distribution (QKD). This technology allows quantum links for hundreds or thousands of users to be set up at the same time, without major hardware changes. Unlike traditional QKD systems, which need a separate link for each user pair, the MQS4000 supports a network that can grow easily and cost-effectively.

The solution has been tested successfully on the national network of SURF, a collaboration of Dutch research institutions. This is a key step in quantum networking. The Falqon Series, including the MQS4000, MQT4000 User Node, and MQX4000 Centre Hub, provides advanced protection against emerging cybersecurity threats, including quantum attacks. It is designed to safeguard fibre-optic networks, making it a strong choice for digital infrastructure, such as telecom, data centres, and industries handling sensitive data.

Q*Bird’s technology also protects against future quantum computer threats, ensuring long-term security for communication networks in a world moving towards quantum computing.

Why it’s important

The MQS4000 Quantum Switch has significant implications for the future of secure digital infrastructure. A key advantage of this technology is its ability to scale quantum communication networks without requiring a large increase in hardware for each new connection. This breakthrough makes quantum key distribution more efficient, especially in large-scale environments like governments, corporations, and industries such as healthcare, where data security is crucial.

Quantum communication is advancing quickly, and traditional encryption methods may soon be at risk due to quantum computers. Q*Bird’s multipoint QKD technology solves this problem. It not only addresses current vulnerabilities but also protects against future quantum computer threats, ensuring long-term network security.

The technology was successfully tested on SURF’s national network, showing its potential for wide-scale deployment. It is a major step towards building quantum-safe digital infrastructures. This development supports efforts across the EU and beyond to create secure, future-proof communication networks.
