    • McCall to lead BT’s fibre, 5G and cybersecurity efforts as part of its long-term network vision.

What happened: Greg McCall to lead BT’s next phase of network and security innovation

BT has appointed Greg McCall as its new Chief Security and Networks Officer, succeeding Howard Watson, who will retire in March 2026 after more than a decade at the company and over 40 years in the telecommunications industry. McCall will formally take over the role on 1 January 2026.

According to BT, McCall will steer “the next chapter of network leadership” as the company advances its mission to become the UK’s most trusted connector of people, businesses and society. This includes ambitious targets such as delivering full fibre to 30 million premises, expanding 5G coverage to more than 90% of the UK, and achieving 5G+ coverage for 99% of the population by 2030.

Having joined BT in 2013, McCall has held a series of senior roles, including leading the UK’s first 5G network, delivering the Emergency Services Network, and managing the launch of BT Sport. He said he looks forward to “innovating in AI and cybersecurity” and “shaping a future that’s faster, smarter, safer, and more connected for everyone.”

Howard Watson reflected on his tenure, calling it “the best job of my career” and expressed confidence in McCall’s leadership. BT CEO Allison Kirkby praised both executives, describing McCall as “a fantastic example of BT’s internal strength” and thanking Watson for his “deep technical expertise and lasting industry impact.”

    Why it’s important

The leadership transition marks a critical moment for BT as it accelerates its digital transformation and strengthens its role in national connectivity and security. McCall’s appointment underscores the company’s focus on network resilience, AI-driven innovation, and cybersecurity, all of which are increasingly vital as the UK expands its digital infrastructure.

The move follows the appointment of Peter Leukert as BT’s Chief Digital Officer earlier this year, reflecting the telecom giant’s continued investment in leadership and innovation as it navigates a competitive and fast-evolving market.
