Canadian footprint with Bereskin & Parr acquisition

IPH Limited, a leading global provider of intellectual property (IP) services, has announced its acquisition of Canadian IP firm Bereskin & Parr. The acquisition strengthens IPH’s presence in Canada, as Bereskin & Parr will merge with Smart & Biggar, an existing member of the IPH network, forming a unified firm under the Smart & Biggar brand. This transaction marks IPH’s fourth acquisition in Canada within two years, further cementing its position as one of the world’s largest IP services groups in secondary markets.

Merging forces to strengthen Canadian IP landscape

The combination of Bereskin & Parr with Smart & Biggar aims to establish a more robust and unified presence in Canada’s IP sector. Smart & Biggar is widely recognised as Canada’s leading intellectual property firm, while Bereskin & Parr has grown to become one of the largest IP firms in the country since its founding in 1965. This merger brings together two firms with complementary expertise, experienced teams, and quality clients. Together, they aim to set new standards of excellence in the Canadian IP industry, offering an expanded pool of IP expertise and better service to their clients.

Leaders express optimism over future opportunities

IPH Limited CEO, Dr Andrew Blattman, expressed excitement about welcoming Bereskin & Parr into the IPH network, emphasising the growth this merger represents for IPH’s presence in the Canadian market. Stephen Beney, Managing Partner of Bereskin & Parr, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the enhanced career opportunities for staff and the increased value the merger will bring to clients. Meanwhile, Matthew Zischka, Managing Director of Smart & Biggar, highlighted the seamless integration of both firms and the benefits of access to a global IP network spanning more than 25 countries. The transaction is expected to be completed on September 27, 2024, after which Bereskin & Parr and Smart & Biggar will officially operate as a unified firm under the Smart & Biggar brand.
