  • WhatsApp, owned by Meta, is testing its Meta AI-powered chatbot with users in India and other markets, aiming to leverage its vast user base to expand its AI services.
  • Meta AI, unveiled by Meta in late September, is a general-purpose assistant capable of answering user queries and generating photorealistic images from text prompts.
  • With over 500 million users in India alone and a global user base exceeding 2 billion, integrating Meta AI into WhatsApp presents a significant opportunity for Meta to scale its AI offerings and potentially surpass its competitors.

WhatsApp is testing Meta AI, its large language model-powered chatbot, with users in India and some other markets.

Meta begins to test Meta AI in India

In a strategic move to harness its vast user base, WhatsApp, a subsidiary of Meta, has initiated testing of its large language model-powered chatbot Meta AI in India and select global markets.

The company recently began testing the AI chatbot, until now available in testing in select markets including the U.S., with some users in India, many of them said. WhatsApp hosts over 500 million users in India, which is the largest user base for the messaging platform.

Meta confirmed the move in a statement. “Our generative AI-powered experiences are under development in varying phases, and we’re testing a range of them publicly in a limited capacity,” a Meta spokesperson revealed.

The AI chatbot takes Meta into new territory

Meta unveiled Meta AI, its general-purpose assistant, in late September. The AI chatbot is designed to answer user queries directly within chats as well as offer them the ability to generate photorealistic images from text prompts.

The unveiling signalled Meta’s entry into the realm of general-purpose assistants, promising enhanced user interactions and functionality within WhatsApp. By leveraging the extensive reach of WhatsApp, boasting over 2 billion monthly active users globally, Meta aims to democratize access to advanced AI capabilities on a scale unprecedented in the industry.
