Vertiv unveils modular AI data centre

  • Vertiv introduces MegaMod CoolChip, a prefabricated modular data centre solution tailored for AI workloads.
  • The system integrates direct-to-chip liquid cooling and high-efficiency power distribution to expedite deployment.

What happened: Vertiv launches MegaMod CoolChip for AI infrastructure

On 25 July 2024, Vertiv announced the release of its MegaMod CoolChip, a prefabricated modular data centre solution designed to meet the escalating demand for AI-ready infrastructure. This system combines offsite fabrication with advanced technologies to reduce deployment time by up to 50% compared to traditional builds.

The MegaMod CoolChip integrates direct-to-chip liquid cooling, accommodating high-power CPUs and GPUs, and balances liquid and air cooling based on specific AI compute platform designs. It also features high-efficiency power protection and distribution, including compatibility with Vertiv’s Trinergy UPS and PowerNexus solutions.

Available globally, the solution can be deployed as a modular retrofit or a new freestanding data centre, supporting capacities up to multiple megawatts. Its prefabricated units, including building enclosures and systems, are assembled on-site, offering flexibility for various deployment scenarios.

Why it is important

The introduction of the MegaMod CoolChip addresses the pressing need for scalable and efficient AI data centre solutions. By utilising prefabricated modules, Vertiv enables faster deployment, which is crucial in meeting the rapid growth of AI applications.

The system’s direct-to-chip liquid cooling technology is significant for managing the thermal demands of high-density AI workloads. This approach enhances energy efficiency and supports sustainability goals by potentially improving Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) compared to traditional cooling methods.

Furthermore, the integration of high-efficiency power distribution systems ensures reliable operation of AI infrastructure. The compatibility with existing Vertiv power solutions allows for streamlined implementation and maintenance, reducing operational complexities.
