On Friday, Comcast‘s enterprise services unit, part of the second-largest internet service provider in the United States, announced a groundbreaking deal with SpaceX’s Starlink. This agreement will deliver satellite-based connectivity to business customers in regions with limited network access.

What happened

Under the leadership of Elon Musk, Starlink has rapidly become a major player in satellite communications, operating the largest constellation of communication satellites. These satellites provide internet connectivity to residential and business customers, particularly in areas where internet access is restricted or unavailable.

Comcast, headquartered in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is a provider of cable TV, broadband internet, and IP phone services. It serves 24.6 million cable TV users, 14.4 million broadband users, and 5.6 million IP phone users, making it the largest cable TV company and the second-largest internet service provider in the U.S., after AT&T. This collaboration allows Comcast to enhance its portfolio with advanced satellite capabilities, offering fast and reliable connections for business applications, especially for customers in underserved areas.

Jason Fritch, Vice President of Starlink Enterprise Sales at SpaceX, also highlighted the positive impact of this collaboration. “Starlink is thrilled to partner with Comcast Business to provide reliable connectivity. This agreement with a service provider acknowledges Starlink’s growing role as a critical element in modern enterprise networks.”

As of now, this partnership not only extends Comcast’s service capabilities but also solidifies Starlink’s position as a leader in satellite-based internet services, setting a precedent for future collaborations in the telecommunications industry.

Over the decades, the satellite internet service operated by Elon Musk’s SpaceX company has over 2 million subscribers globally, and is expanding rapidly in new markets, as the satellite deployment continues.
