What happened: Formation of the AI Energy Council

On 8 April 2025, the UK government convened the inaugural meeting of the AI Energy Council in Whitehall. Chaired by the Secretaries of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, and for Science, Innovation and Technology, the council includes senior representatives from the energy and technology sectors. Its primary objective is to ensure that the nation’s energy infrastructure can support the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies.

Discussions focused on delivering secure and sustainable power necessary for AI and high-performance computing infrastructure, aligning with the government’s Plan for Change aimed at boosting economic growth and technological innovation.

Why it’s important

The establishment of the AI Energy Council signifies the UK’s commitment to integrating AI development with sustainable energy practices. By addressing the substantial energy demands of AI technologies, the council aims to balance technological advancement with environmental responsibility.

This initiative reflects a proactive approach to managing the intersection of energy consumption and digital innovation, ensuring that the UK’s infrastructure can accommodate future growth in AI applications.
