    • Trump may slow down some of the Biden administration’s antitrust policies, especially the proposal to break up Google’s dominance.
    • The U.S. Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission are advancing antitrust cases against tech giants like Google and Apple.

    What happened

Donald Trump may slow or change some of the antitrust policies implemented by the Biden administration, particularly those targeting large tech companies. Among the most notable proposals is the potential breakup of Google’s parent company Alphabet‘s dominance in the online search field. Trump is expected to continue investigating cases against large tech companies. Several of these cases began during his first term, but he has recently expressed skepticism about the potential breakup of Google, highlighting the power he will have over how these cases proceed.

Currently, the U.S. Department of Justice is filing two antitrust cases against Google—one involving search and the other advertising technology. There is also a case against Apple. Additionally, the Federal Trade Commission, led by Lina Khan, is suing Meta Platforms and Amazon. In the search case, the Department of Justice has proposed a series of potential remedies, including possible structural adjustments, to reduce Google’s monopoly impact on the market.

    Why it is important

Trump’s attitude and potential policy changes will have a profound impact on the technology industry in the United States and globally. Implementing antitrust policies helps improve market competition rules, enhance economic efficiency, protect consumers’ rights and interests, and safeguard the public interest. Trump’s stance may influence the formulation and enforcement of these rules. The U.S. Department of Justice is filing antitrust cases against Google, including those involving search and advertising technology, which may set influential legal precedents. Trump’s policy changes could affect the outcomes of these cases and future legal interpretations. If companies like Google face breakup, it will reshape the global search market and the tech industry landscape. Trump’s policy choices will directly impact the structure and competition dynamics of the global market.
