Tesla‘s highly anticipated robotaxi unveiling has been postponed, with CEO Elon Musk citing the need for additional design modifications. Initially scheduled for August 8, the event is now expected to take place in October. Musk confirmed the delay on his social media platform, X, explaining that the extra time would allow for an important design change to the front of the vehicle and the opportunity to showcase other features.
The delay comes as Tesla navigates numerous engineering and regulatory hurdles in developing its robotaxis and autonomous driving systems. The billionaire CEO has set ambitious goals, previously stating that Tesla aims to mass-produce a robotaxi with no steering wheel or pedals by 2024. However, Tesla has missed several self-imposed deadlines for its self-driving vehicles.
Wall Street analysts and investors were not surprised by the postponement, given the complex path to achieving fully autonomous vehicles. Tesla’s stock, which had experienced fluctuations, was up 5% on Monday following Musk’s public endorsement of Donald Trump in the US presidential race. There is speculation that Musk’s endorsement of the Trump administration could potentially ease regulatory approvals for Tesla’s autonomous vehicles.

Prioritising safety and transparency over flashy unveilings could restore faith in Tesla’s ambitious endeavours.
