What happened

John Schulman, a co-founder of OpenAI, announced on social media platform X late Monday that he has left the company to join rival Anthropic. “This choice stems from my desire to deepen my focus on AI alignment and to start a new chapter of my career where I can return to hands-on technical work,” Schulman explained.

Additionally, OpenAI’s President and co-founder, Greg Brockman, is taking a sabbatical until the end of the year. Peter Deng, a product manager who joined last year, has also departed. OpenAI did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The company is undergoing significant personnel changes, including reassigning AI safety leader Aleksander Madry in July, the departure of co-founder and chief scientist Ilya Sutskever in May, and the exit of founding member Andrej Karpathy in February. Meanwhile, Tesla CEO and OpenAI co-founder Elon Musk has revived a lawsuit against the company and CEO Sam Altman, accusing them of prioritising profits over the public good.

Why it’s important

The movement of high-profile AI researchers and executives, such as John Schulman, can significantly influence innovation trajectories. Schulman’s expertise in reinforcement learning and AI alignment could lead to advancements in these areas at Anthropic, potentially accelerating the development of safer and more reliable AI systems.

Schulman’s emphasis on AI alignment highlights a growing trend in the AI community towards prioritising the ethical and safe deployment of AI technologies. This shift reflects broader concerns about the potential risks associated with advanced AI, such as unintended consequences or misuse. As a leading voice in this area, Schulman’s career move could inspire similar shifts within other organisations.

Besides, with multiple key figures leaving or taking sabbaticals, including Schulman, Sutskever, and Brockman, OpenAI may undergo strategic changes. This could involve altering its research priorities, restructuring its leadership, or even re-evaluating its mission. These changes could affect OpenAI’s role as a leader in the AI industry and its influence on global AI policies and standards.
