OUR TAKE
Google has long dominated the global search market with its powerful technology and broad user base. However, as AI technology continues to advance, new challengers are beginning to emerge. OpenAI, a leader in AI, recently announced the launch of SearchGPT, a new search engine that uses AI technology to provide access to real-time Internet information. This move not only marks OpenAI’s entry into the search market, but also signals the beginning of a competition that could change the current market landscape.

What happened
Artificial intelligence leader OpenAI has stepped into search market with the introduction of SearchGPT, a new AI-powered search engine that provides real-time access to internet information. This move challenges the long-standing dominance of Google in this sector.
The announcement, made on a recent Thursday, not only positions OpenAI against Google but also pits it against Microsoft’s Bing and the emerging AI chatbot firm Perplexity, which is backed by Amazon’s Jeff Bezos and Nvidia.
Following the announcement, shares of Alphabet, Google’s parent company, fell by 3%.
OpenAI has opened sign-ups for SearchGPT, which is currently in its prototype stage and being tested with a select group of users and publishers. The company plans to integrate the standout features of SearchGPT into its ChatGPT service in the future.
“AI-powered search tools from OpenAI and Perplexity re-affirm search as a content engagement model but pressure Google to be better at its own game,” Canaccord Genuity analyst Kingsley Crane said.
As of June, Google holds a staggering 91.1% share of the search engine market, according to data from Statcounter.

Why it’s important
OpenAI has stated in a blog post that SearchGPT will deliver summarised search results with source links in response to user queries and will allow for follow-up questions with contextual responses.
Publishers will also be given tools to manage how their content appears in SearchGPT results. News Corp and The Atlantic have joined as publishing partners for SearchGPT.
This development by OpenAI signifies a closer collaboration with publishers, following content licensing agreements with major organisations such as the Associated Press, News Corp, and Axel Springer.
However, new AI-powered search providers may face challenges. Crane stated, “Newer AI-powered search providers could face challenges of their own, with Perplexity already facing pending legal action from publishers like Wired and Forbes, and Condé Nast.”
Major search engines have been integrating AI into their services since the launch of ChatGPT in November 2022. Microsoft has adopted OpenAI technology for its Bing search engine, while Google introduced AI-powered summaries at its developer conference in May.
Google has not yet responded to inquiries regarding the potential impact of SearchGPT on its operations.
