    OUR TAKE

It enhances user experience by providing quicker, more detailed responses while maintaining website traffic. This evolution could redefine how users engage with search engines, balancing AI innovation with traditional search functionality.

    What happened

Microsoft has announced a significant update to Bing Search, transforming the search results page to integrate AI-generated answers alongside traditional search results. Currently, this feature is available to a limited number of users. Bing Search now features AI-generated answers at the top of the page, created by large and small language models that sift through millions of sources to provide the most accurate response. These answers are broken down into a document index that offers further detail on specific aspects of the search query for users who wish to delve deeper.

Microsoft has refined its methodologies to improve accuracy, recognising that generative AI systems are still prone to errors. The firm has also addressed concerns over reduced website traffic, which is crucial for sites that rely on visits for revenue. Early data indicates that this new experience maintains the number of clicks to websites, supporting a healthy web ecosystem, as users can still click through to additional information from within the AI-generated search results.

    Why it’s important

This early iteration of the generative search feature is currently operational for only a small fraction of user queries. Microsoft is progressively rolling out the feature to Bing users, welcoming feedback and refining its functionality. Once satisfied that the AI-generated results offer a superior user experience, the company plans to expand its availability. This update represents a significant shift in how search engines utilise artificial intelligence to provide more immediate and detailed responses, potentially transforming the way users interact with search engines and the internet at large.

By integrating AI-generated answers, Microsoft aims to enhance the accuracy and relevance of Bing’s search results while maintaining a healthy balance between AI-generated content and traditional search listings, ensuring that websites continue to receive the necessary traffic to sustain their operations.
