Meta will not immediately join EU’s AI Pact ahead of new law

    • Meta Platforms has decided not to join the EU’s voluntary AI Pact immediately.
    • The company aims to focus on compliance with the upcoming AI Act, which takes effect in 2026.

    OUR TAKE
Meta is choosing to focus on compliance with the EU’s AI Act, which requires detailed data transparency, instead of joining the voluntary AI Pact right away.  This strategy highlights the importance of adhering to upcoming regulations while preparing for responsible AI practices in the future.

    What happened

Meta Platforms announced that it will not immediately join the European Union’s voluntary AI Pact, which serves as a precursor to the comprehensive AI Act set to take effect on August 2, 2026.

The AI Act establishes the first-ever rules governing AI development and deployment in the EU, requiring companies to provide detailed summaries of the data used to train their AI models.

While acknowledging the importance of harmonised EU regulations, a Meta spokesperson stated that the company is currently concentrating on compliance efforts under the AI Act and may consider joining the AI Pact later.

The AI Act is designed to complement other significant EU legislation, including the Digital Markets Act and Digital Services Act.

    Why it’s important

Meta’s decision to delay participation in the EU’s AI Pact underscores a strategic prioritisation of compliance over immediate engagement with voluntary measures.    By focusing on the AI Act, Meta is positioning itself to navigate the evolving regulatory landscape effectively, especially given the substantial implications of the Act for AI data transparency.

As the EU leads the way in regulatory frameworks for AI, companies like Meta must balance innovation with compliance to avoid penalties and enhance public trust.    The AI Act, coupled with other legislative pillars, reflects a growing consensus that responsible AI deployment is essential for sustainable tech growth.

This approach not only sets a precedent for other regions but also places significant pressure on tech giants to align their operations with ethical standards.
