    What happened

Meta Platforms and Universal Music Group (UMG) have announced an expanded global music licensing deal, marking a significant milestone in their partnership. The multi-year agreement now includes WhatsApp for the first time, demonstrating a deepening collaboration between the tech giant and the music industry powerhouse.

One of the key objectives of the extended agreement is to combat the unauthorised use of artificial intelligence-generated content. Both Meta and UMG have committed to protecting the rights of artists and songwriters by ensuring they are fairly compensated for their work. This move reflects the companies’ shared vision of respecting human creativity and supporting the music community.

UMG’s Chief Digital Officer, Michael Nash, expressed his enthusiasm about the collaboration, stating, “We are delighted that Meta shares our artist-centric vision for respecting human creativity and compensating artists and songwriters fairly.” He further emphasised the importance of addressing unauthorised AI-generated content to safeguard the rights of artists and protect the integrity of the music industry.

    Why it’s important

The partnership between Meta and UMG dates back to 2017 when they initially joined forces. Through this landmark agreement, UMG became the first major music company to license its music catalogue across Meta platforms. Since then, the collaboration has provided artists with opportunities to showcase their music on various platforms and reach a global audience.

One notable aspect of the partnership is the exploration of new digital channels to promote artists and their music. This includes leveraging virtual reality environments through Meta Quest devices, offering a unique and immersive experience for music enthusiasts. The expansion of the deal to include music licensing on WhatsApp adds another dimension to the partnership, enabling artists to connect with fans in innovative ways.

By integrating music licensing on WhatsApp, Meta and UMG are creating new opportunities for artists and songwriters to engage with their audiences through a popular messaging platform. This alignment with social media and messaging services allows musicians to share their music more effectively and build stronger connections with their fans.

The focus on combating unauthorised AI-generated content underscores the proactive approach taken by Meta and UMG to address emerging challenges in the digital landscape. By working together to protect artist rights and uphold copyright regulations, the companies are setting a precedent for fair compensation and ethical use of music content.
