What happened

India’s telecoms regulator on Tuesday directed service providers to stop all promotional calls from unregistered callers and blacklist them to address a surge in spam and phished calls.

The government has also worked to combat a surge in these kinds of calls, including scams posing as representatives of companies like Fedex and Blue Dart, sending phishing links under the pretext of recovering lost packages.

“All promotional voice calls made by unregistered telemarketers using telecommunication resources should be stopped immediately,” the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India said in a statement.

Why it’s important

With the popularity of the Internet and mobile phones, spam calls and phishing methods have emerged one after another, seriously affecting people’s daily life and financial security.

The latest directive from India’s telecoms regulator is undoubtedly an important step in addressing this issue. By blacklisting unregistered promotional calls and restricting their contact, users can be effectively protected from harassment by bad actors.

This is not only a warning to telecom service providers, urging them to strengthen the management of calls, but also reflects the government’s great importance to protect citizens’ rights.

However, in addition to the regulation of technical means, it is also necessary for the public to enhance their awareness of self-protection, increase their vigilance against junk calls, and treat cold calls with caution to reduce potential risks.
