    • Hollywood’s video game performers are taking to the picket line to demand protections against the misuse of their voices by AI technology.
    • The strike highlights the growing concerns over the use of artificial intelligence in the gaming industry and its potential impact on the livelihood of performers.

    OUR TAKE
The strike has brought attention to the ethical use of AI in game development and the need for clear regulations. It has also caused delays in the production of several major video game titles that rely on the striking performers. The public has shown broad support for the performers, recognising the importance of protecting creative rights in the digital age.

    What happened

Hollywood video game performers are set to gather at the Warner Bros Studios to stage a picket on Thursday. They are protesting against what they perceive as a lack of commitment from leading gaming corporations to safeguard the interests of voice actors and motion capture artists. Their primary concern is the unchecked application of artificial intelligence technology that could potentially use their performances without proper oversight or compensation.

The protest marks the first major labour demonstration since video game voice actors and performance artists went on strike last week. This strike came after lengthy negotiations with industry giants like Activision, Warner Bros., and Walt Disney Co. failed to reach a resolution after 18 months. The main issue at hand was the need for a new contract in the interactive media sector that properly addresses the use of AI and provides sufficient protections for performers.

    Why it’s important

The strike is expected to have a significant impact on the video game industry, as many popular games rely heavily on the performances of actors to bring their characters to life. Without the participation of these performers, game developers may struggle to create engaging and realistic gaming experiences.

Industry experts are closely watching the situation and are hopeful that a resolution can be reached between the performers and the video game companies. In the meantime, fans of video games may see delays in the release of new titles or changes to the way characters are portrayed in their favourite games.

The strike by Hollywood’s video game performers underscores the broader debate on AI and intellectual property rights. As AI technology continues to evolve, it is crucial to establish legal frameworks that protect the rights of artists and perform.
