Heeyo launches AI chatbot as interactive tutor and friend for kids

  • Heeyo, a new startup, has unveiled an AI chatbot aimed at providing children ages three to eleven with an interactive learning companion and playmate.
  • The app offers 2,000+ activities, including games and stories, for fun learning, while parents can customise the AI tutor to fit their family values and kids’ interests.

OUR TAKE
AI for kids raises concerns about safety and data privacy, but Heeyo’s commitment to COPPA compliance and a focus on healthy engagement may pave the way for innovative educational solutions in a largely untapped market.

What happened

Founded by Xiaoyin Qu, Heeyo has recently emerged from stealth mode, securing an impressive $3.5M seed round from investors, including the OpenAI Startup Fund and Pear VC. The Heeyo app is now available on both Android and iOS platforms globally, targeting a substantial market of one billion children—a demographic that has been largely overlooked by major tech companies.

To address rising safety concerns associated with AI for kids, Heeyo places a strong emphasis on data privacy. The platform ensures that children’s voice data is deleted immediately and does not store any personal information, fostering a secure environment for young users. The AI chatbot is designed not only to provide emotional support but also to actively engage children through a variety of interactive learning games. Importantly, the chatbot adapts its approach based on the child’s age and developmental milestones, ensuring that each interaction is tailored to meet their unique needs and encourage effective learning.

Why it’s important

Qu emphasises the critical importance of providing dedicated attention to children, particularly those with special needs or difficulties in making friends. Recognising that these children often struggle to receive the support they need, Heeyo’s team has brought together a diverse group of experts, including children’s book authors, child psychologists, and creatives from Nickelodeon. This multidisciplinary approach has enabled the creation of interactive experiences that foster creativity, autonomy, and meaningful learning.

Initial tests with approximately 100 children revealed that the AI chatbot effectively adapts its interactions based on age. For instance, it encourages nine-year-olds to engage in more open-ended responses, while offering three-year-olds choices to facilitate their learning and exploration.

In terms of business strategy, Heeyo plans to sell tokens for in-app games, with prices ranging from $4.99 for 200 tokens to $59.99 for 4,000. Qu’s vision is to build a sustainable long-term business, tapping into the significant opportunities present in the children’s education market.
