    • Google is rolling out its new “Ask Photos” feature, allowing users to search their photo libraries using natural language and AI-driven queries.
    • This feature, which includes an upgraded classic search, is currently available to select users and will be expanded to more languages soon.

    OUR TAKE
Google is introducing the “Ask Photos” feature in Google Photos, which uses AI to help users search their photo libraries with natural language queries and complete tasks like summarising vacations or selecting photos for albums. Alongside this, Google is enhancing the classic search functionality to support natural language searches and has replaced the Library tab with a new collection page to simplify photo management. This feature is being rolled out to select users and will support more languages in the near future.

    What happened

Google is testing a new feature called “Ask Photos” in Google Photos, which uses its Gemini AI models to allow users to search their photo libraries by asking natural language questions. This feature lets users inquire about past events or retrieve specific images based on their content. It also includes functionalities for summarising activities or selecting photos for albums, making it easier to manage and organise personal photo collections.

Google is enhancing its classic search with natural language capabilities, allowing users to search for images using phrases like “Alice and me laughing” or “Kayaking on a lake surrounded by mountains.” The Library tab has been replaced with a new collection page to improve photo organisation, and users will have the option to switch between classic and AI-enhanced search methods. This update is initially available to select users and will expand to more languages in the coming weeks.

    Why it’s important

It represents a significant advancement in Google’s photo management and search technology. The introduction of the “Ask Photos” feature allows users to find relevant photos and information quickly by asking natural language questions, greatly simplifying traditional photo search and organisation processes. This AI-driven functionality enhances user experience, making photo libraries more intuitive and efficient to use.

The upgraded classic search and the new collection page further improve the usability of Google Photos. These enhancements not only increase search accuracy and flexibility but also refine the organisation of photos and videos, making it easier for users to manage and share their memories. These changes reflect Google’s ongoing efforts to leverage AI technology to enhance personal applications and strengthen its market competitiveness.
