    OUR TAKE
Google upgrades its Gemini chatbot to offer better performance and broader availability, ensuring it is quicker and accessible in a wider range of languages and territories. The company also implements new functionalities to counteract hallucinations and safeguard adolescent users to show its dedication to the ethical advancement of AI technology. These initiatives reflect Google’s broader strategy to advance the capabilities of its AI technology and ensure that it is developed and used in a manner that is ethical, safe, and beneficial to all users.

    What happened

Google has significantly enhanced its Gemini chatbot, and the company has introduced Gemini 1.5 Flash, a lightweight multimodal model that is now available in 40 languages across approximately 230 countries. This update aims to deliver faster response times and improved quality with particular enhancements in reasoning and image understanding. Google claims that the new model is more efficient and cost-effective to run which is vital for managing the computational overhead of a chatbot platform. Additionally, Google has expanded Gemini’s context window to 32,000 tokens, allowing the chatbot to handle longer text snippets and files and reducing the likelihood of forgetting topics in a conversation.

To address the issue of hallucinations, Google has implemented a feature that displays links to related web content under certain Gemini-generated answers. This feature is designed to provide users with a way to verify the information and understand its source. Furthermore, Google has made file uploads available to all Gemini users, enabling them to analyse data files and uncover insights. The company has also launched a teen-focused Gemini experience, with additional policies and safeguards to protect younger users.

    Why it’s important

Google’s enhancements to its Gemini chatbot are crucial as they reflect the ongoing evolution of AI technology, highlighting advancements in performance, accessibility, and ethical considerations.

The improvements not only indicate Google’s commitment to staying at the forefront of AI innovation but also underscore the importance of responsible AI development, ensuring that the technology is accessible, safe, and beneficial to users worldwide. This move is indicative of the broader industry’s shift towards creating AI that is not only powerful but also ethically sound and globally inclusive.
