What happened
The European Union’s pioneering legislation on artificial intelligence officially took effect on Thursday, with the EU promising to foster innovation and safeguard the rights of its citizens.
Earlier in the year, the EU established the inaugural comprehensive regulations to oversee AI, including potent platforms such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT, following challenging and intense discussions. Although initially proposed in 2021, these regulations gained heightened importance when ChatGPT made its debut in 2022, demonstrating generative AI’s capacity to produce articulate text with remarkable speed.
“Today marks a significant step forward in our commitment to shaping a digital future that is human-centric and respects our values,” said a spokesperson for the EU Commission. “The AI law is a testament to our dedication to protecting citizens while fostering innovation.”
The law known as the “AI Act” employs a risk-based strategy, mandating that companies adhere to more stringent compliance measures for high-risk AI systems to ensure the protection of citizens’rights. Enterprises that breach the regulations concerning prohibited activities or data responsibilities risk incurring penalties amounting to a maximum of seven percent of their global annual turnover.
