OURTAKE
EA Sports has relaunched its college football video game series after an 11-year hiatus. Although the AI model was initially imperfect, tweaks to the images and data ultimately made the creation of virtual players more efficient and less costly. This innovation not only improves the realism of the game but also lays the groundwork for the development of future annual editions and other sports games.

What happened

EA Sports relaunchs the college football video game “EA Sports College Football 25”after 11 years and uses AI to create digital avatars of 11,000 real players. This decision stemmed from the need for a more efficient and less costly solution than the Madden NFL series, as there are 6 times as many NCAA Division I football players as there are NFL players. EA developed AI tools to convert college-supplied headshots into detailed 3D avatars, and while the AI wasn’t always successful in its first attempts, by adjusting the imagery and data, it ultimately achieved a model that satisfied the need of the model.

The models for the new game are not as detailed as the Madden NFL models, but they are more personalised than the generic players in previous versions. Each player received a deluxe version of the game and a minimum of $600, with more influential players receiving higher payouts for promotion on game covers and social media.

Why it’s important

EA Sports demonstrates the innovative use of AI in video game development by using AI technology to create a large number of digital avatars of real players. It enhances the realism and player experience of the game and provides new ideas and methods for other game development companies. Meanwhile, the reboot of the college football video game series fills a gap in the market and satisfies the needs of players and fans.

By demonstrating the potential of AI technology in gaming, this innovation has the potential to drive the entire gaming industry in the direction of greater efficiency and realism. This initiative by EA Sports is a major upgrade for the company itself and a powerful boost for the entire video game industry, demonstrating the impact that technological advances can have on both the entertainment and business worlds.
