What happened
Contextual AI, a startup focused on improving the performance of artificial intelligence models, has raised $80M through a Series A funding round. The Mountain View, California-based company, which declined to disclose its post-money valuation, is estimated by data provider PitchBook to be worth around $609M. The funding round was led by venture capital firm Greycroft and included contributions from existing investors such as Bain Capital Ventures and Lightspeed, who had previously invested $20M to help launch the company in 2023.
Douwe Kiela, CEO of Contextual AI and a former team leader at Meta has been instrumental in developing RAG. This technique enhances AI model accuracy by providing curated information, thereby reducing errors and hallucinations. The newly raised funds will be used to bring Contextual AI’s product to market, with initial collaborations already underway with major companies in the finance, technology, and media sectors, including HSBC and Qualcomm.

Why it’s important
The CEO of Contextual AI, Douwe Kiela, formerly led a team at Meta that developed RAG, a technique that feeds curated information into AI models to improve their accuracy and reduce errors such as hallucinations. Since the mainstream success of OpenAI’s ChatGPT, RAG has gained traction among AI practitioners as a means to enhance the reliability of AI outputs. This technique has become increasingly popular as it addresses some of the critical limitations of off-the-shelf AI models.
With the new funding, Contextual AI aims to bring its product to market, although no specific launch timeline has been announced. Currently, the company is selectively collaborating with clients in the finance, technology, and media sectors, including HSBC and Qualcomm. Despite other cloud providers like Microsoft Azure and Amazon Web Services already offering RAG-integrated AI software, Contextual AI’s unique approach, and expertise are gaining recognition for their potential to further advance AI model performance and set new industry standards.
