What happened

Apple is delaying the rollout of its new artificial intelligence features, which will not be available at the initial launch of the upcoming iPhone and iPad software overhauls, according to a report by Bloomberg News. The iPhone maker plans to begin deploying Apple Intelligence, its AI-driven text and image generation service, as part of software updates scheduled for release by October. These AI features will arrive a few weeks after the initial iOS 18 and iPadOS 18 releases planned for September.

Apple intends to make Apple Intelligence accessible to software developers for early testing as soon as this week via iOS 18.1 and iPadOS 18.1 beta releases. The AI features will be available on iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPads and Macs equipped with the M1 chip or later versions. The iPhone mirroring feature on macOS Sequoia will allow users to view and interact with the phone’s screen on Mac computers.

Why it’s important

The delay in launching the AI features comes after Apple faced regulatory hurdles in the European Union, where landmark tech rules require the company to ensure compatibility with rival products and services. This setback underscores the broader regulatory challenges Apple faces as it navigates its expanding AI and digital footprint in Europe.

Apple’s AI push, announced in June, includes several new features and software enhancements aimed at bolstering sales amid a challenging market. The delay could impact the company’s strategic goals and competitive positioning, as timely delivery of innovative technologies is crucial in the fast-paced technology sector.

The decision to delay the AI features highlights the importance of regulatory compliance, particularly in the European market, where stringent rules aim to promote fair competition and protect consumer rights. For Apple, ensuring that its AI services comply with EU regulations is essential to avoid potential fines and maintain its reputation as a responsible technology leader.

The delay also signals that Apple is taking a cautious approach to integrating AI into its ecosystem, prioritising compliance and user trust over rapid deployment. This approach reflects the growing emphasis on ethical AI and data protection in the technology industry.
