Amazon has unveiled a significant advancement in its technology arsenal, developing in-house AI chips at its Austin, Texas chip lab. These chips are designed to reduce the reliance of Amazon Web Services (AWS) on Nvidia, which currently dominates the AI chip market.
The initiative is aimed at offering more cost-effective computing solutions for AWS customers. According to Rami Sinno, the director of engineering for Amazon’s Annapurna Labs that is a part of its cloud business AWS, Amazon’s customers were increasingly demanding cheaper alternatives to Nvidia.
The new server design, tested by Amazon engineers, incorporates these proprietary AI chips, which promise up to 50% cost savings compared to Nvidia’s offerings. This development is crucial as it addresses the growing demand for more affordable AI processing capabilities from Amazon’s customers. The company’s AI chip lineup includes Trainium and Inferentia, which complement its well-established Graviton processors used for general-purpose computing.
