Africell Mobile Money, through its service Afrimoney, has partnered with Caminho de Ferro Luanda EP (CFL) to enhance ticket payment options for train journeys. Since the partnership’s launch on June 14, 2024, over 500 payments have been processed daily, aiming to digitalise transactions for the 6,000 tickets sold each day across CFL stations. This collaboration, which spans from 2024 to 2026, is part of CFL’s modernisation efforts and Africell’s drive to promote digital payments.

Enhanced payment options

Afrimoney now allows users to pay for CFL train tickets via their Africell mobile numbers, simplifying the process and reducing issues related to cash handling. This system is available at nine CFL stations, including Bungo, Textang, Rotunda, Muceques, Filda, Gamek, Estalagem, Comarca, and Viana, and supports both digital and analog phones.

“They are already doing some work in the area of community sports, particularly in basketball, and we can extend this partnership to other areas.”

Broader impact on public services

This initiative is part of a broader strategy to integrate Afrimoney into various public services. Currently, the service also covers payments for water and prepaid electricity. Africell’s involvement aligns with Angola’s financial and digital inclusion goals, reinforcing the government’s efforts to modernise the payment ecosystem.

Future sports infrastructure projects

Africell plans to leverage this partnership to support the Angolan government in renovating and building community and school sports facilities. This effort aims to improve access to quality sports infrastructure, contributing to the National Sports Plan (PLANADESPORTO), which is pending approval by the Council of Ministers.

Collaboration and Community Engagement:

The potential partnership, discussed in a meeting on June 27, 2024, at the Ministry of Youth and Sports headquarters, was attended by key figures including Minister Rui Falcão, Secretary of State for Sports Teresa Baião, Africell Group CEO Ziad Dalloul, and Africell Angola CEO Jorge Vázquez. Minister Falcão expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, noting its potential to extend beyond basketball to other sports areas.
