    • AI safety encompasses operational practices, philosophies, and mechanisms designed to ensure that developed AI systems and models operate as intended by their developers, minimising the risk of unintended consequences or harm.
    • With GenAI functionalities becoming increasingly integrated into both commercial and household usage, the broad range of ethical, social, and technical challenges posed by AI represent an existential challenge.
    • The importance of appropriate AI safety can be gauged from the risks and consequences that can easily be associated with unregulated AI development.

AI safety is not just a technical challenge but a moral imperative. As AI technologies continue to advance and proliferate, prioritising safety is essential to harnessing their full potential for the benefit of humanity while minimising risks and ensuring ethical and equitable outcomes.

    Discussing AI risks

AI risks can be categorised quite extensively. Each poses a unique challenge for organisations, owing to the varying degrees of immediacy and scale of possible damage they can cause.

    1. AI Model Risks

The most immediate AI-related risks are present within the AI model itself. These can include:

    2. Model Poisoning

The AI model learning process is a critical process that determines the ability of any model to deliver accurate and reliable results. Malicious actors may compromise this process by injecting the training dataset with false and misleading data. Consequently, the model will learn and adapt these incorrect patterns, which will affect the generated outcomes.

    3. Bias

As a result of model poisoning, the AI model may generate outputs owing to the discriminatory data and assumptions that were part of the compromised dataset it was trained on. These assumptions can be racial, socio-economic, political, or gendered. These biased outputs can lead to adverse consequences, especially in instances where the compromised AI model is being used for critical decision-making purposes such as recruitment, credit evaluations, and criminal justice.

    4. Hallucination

Hallucination refers to an output generated by an AI model that is either wholly false or corrupted. However, since the output is coherent and may follow a series of outputs that were not false, they may be harder to spot and identify.

    Why is AI safety important?

The significance of AI safety becomes evident when considering the risks associated with unchecked AI development. Organisations investing in AI systems are increasingly focusing on enhancing their capabilities, which, if left unregulated, can lead to unintended consequences such as social inequalities, privacy breaches, and threats to democratic processes.

AI developers must prioritise safety considerations from both ethical and operational standpoints. This involves conducting thorough assessments of potential implications and misuses of their work, fostering accountability in AI development processes.

Given the extensive impact of AI on various facets of society, including employment, human-machine interactions, and global economics, ensuring AI safety is essential. With each advancement in AI functionality, the transformative potential becomes more apparent, necessitating proactive measures to address safety concerns.

Ultimately, safeguarding AI safety is not only about mitigating immediate harm but also about shaping the future trajectory of society and governance.
