South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol and Japanese Head of the State Fumio Kishida will reportedly participate jointly in a roundtable on technological cooperation at Stanford University on Nov. 17. This marks another important step in repairing relations between the two countries.
Japan-South Korea relations expected the further move
According to reports, South Korea’s Yoon and Japan’s Kishida are expected to discuss technological cooperation between the two countries as well as three-way cooperation with the United States at the meeting. Kishida is expected to emphasize the importance of cooperation in the procurement of semiconductors and strategic minerals, as well as the development of artificial intelligence technology.
The event not only provides a platform for the leaders of the two countries to exchange and consult on topics of mutual interest, but also paves the way for further technological cooperation between the two countries.

Since taking office in May 2022, South Korea’s Yoon has made repairing relations with Japan a top priority. This year, Yoon visited Japan and pledged to end years of hostility at a summit with Japan’s Kishida. Japan agreed to lift export restrictions on semiconductor materials, and South Korea withdrew its complaint to the World Trade Organization (WTO).
The two countries have since engaged in intensive military and economic co-operation and revived alliances aimed at countering the North Korean threat and China’s growing influence.
This participation in Stanford University’s roundtable on innovation will provide an opportunity for the leaders of the two countries to further deepen their cooperation. By strengthening exchanges and cooperation with each other, South Korea and Japan are expected to achieve a closer partnership in the future.
