  • Musk and Widodo met in Indonesia’s Bali after both attended the World Water Forum on Monday. “We made an offer, is it possible to build an EV battery plant here, precursor cathode. And he will consider it,” Luhut said.

Indonesia’s investment minister stated that Elon Musk will consider building an electric vehicle battery plant in the country, following a meeting with President Joko Widodo. Musk and Widodo met in Bali after attending the World Water Forum. Minister Luhut Pandjaitan made the offer for the plant, mentioning Musk’s interest in exploring the possibility. Musk’s immediate response wasn’t available.

Luhut also mentioned that Widodo urged Musk to explore investing in an AI center within Indonesia and to consider constructing a launchpad for SpaceX on Biak Island in Papua province, a proposal previously presented by the government. Indonesia has long sought to attract Tesla to establish manufacturing facilities for electric vehicles, leveraging its abundant nickel resources to bolster the EV sector’s development.

Starlink available in Indonesia now

On Sunday, Musk had launched SpaceX’s satellite internet service for the health sector in Indonesia.

Starlink was now available commercially, but the government would focus its services first on outer and underdeveloped regions.

SpaceX’s Starlink, which owns around 60% of the roughly 7,500 satellites orbiting earth, is dominant in the satellite internet sphere.
