  • Apple’s iPhone sales in China witnessed a remarkable 52% jump in April compared to the previous year, according to Reuters calculations based on industry data.
  • The surge follows a period of weak performance earlier in the year, attributed to intensified competition in the high-end smartphone market from local rivals like Huawei.
  • Despite facing a 37% sales slump in the first two months of 2024, Apple experienced a notable 12% increase in shipments in China in March, marking a significant turnaround.

Amidst intensifying competition in China’s smartphone market, Apple has witnessed a notable resurgence, with iPhone sales soaring by 52% in April compared to the previous year, according to Reuters calculations based on industry data. This surge comes after a period of sluggish performance earlier in the year, signaling a significant turnaround for the US tech giant in the world’s largest smartphone market.

Weak performance reversed

Intensified competition in China

Apple’s resurgence comes amid fierce competition in the Chinese smartphone market, particularly from local rivals like Huawei. The US tech giant has been contending with increasing pressure in the high-end segment of the market.

Improvement in shipments

The surge in iPhone sales follows a period of decline, with Apple experiencing a 37% slump in sales during the first two months of 2024. However, there was a significant improvement in March, with shipments in China increasing by 12% compared to earlier months.

Overall smartphone market growth

Data from the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT) revealed a broader trend of growth in the Chinese smartphone market, with overall sales increasing by 25.5% to 22.7 million units.
