PNCC employs Open RAN for new 5G services in Palau

  • PNCC’s teams underwent a workshop on 5G and Open RAN technologies to improve mobile networks.
  • O-RAN adoption by PNCC promises faster, accessible 4G and 5G services, enhancing coverage.
  • Supported by a USTDA grant, PNCC plans to expand mobile networks with 5G Open RAN technology.

Palau-based PNCC‘s management and technical teams have undergone a comprehensive workshop on 5G and Open RAN technologies and operations.

Open Radio Access Network (O-RAN) presents an innovative approach to constructing mobile networks, promising PNCC faster and more accessible 4G and 5G services. Unlike conventional networks, O-RAN allows PNCC to utilize equipment from various vendors, enhancing network flexibility and cost-efficiency, ensuring long-term sustainability and superior performance. This translates to improved mobile coverage and internet speeds for all in Palau.

What is Open-RAN?

Held in Palau, the workshop received backing from a Technical Assistance grant provided by the U.S. Trade and Development Agency (USTDA). This grant facilitates PNCC’s initial project phase, designing a new mobile telecom network based on 5G Open RAN technology, and expanding the mobile network’s reach to underserved areas with additional cell sites.

Widelity, a U.S.-based provider of engineering consulting services, conducted the workshop and has been selected to aid PNCC in training and devising detailed plans for the new system.
