Vodafone UK and Ericsson have partnered to test AI-driven solutions aimed at improving 5G energy efficiency. The trial, conducted at select London sites, achieved a 33% reduction in daily power consumption for 5G radio units.
Ericsson provided its AI and machine learning (ML)-powered software, including the Service Continuity AI App, designed to optimise network energy use, reduce costs, and lower carbon emissions. The trial focused on three key use cases: 5G Deep Sleep, 4G Cell Sleep Mode Orchestration, and a Radio Power Efficiency Heatmap. These features allow Vodafone to adjust power consumption dynamically, switching off certain components during low-traffic periods and reactivating them when demand increases.
By leveraging 5G Deep Sleep technology, Vodafone can cut power use by 70% during off-peak hours. The operator aims to enhance network sustainability without affecting service quality as it continues expanding 5G coverage across the UK.
