Skynopy raises $16M for satellite ground station network

    • Skynopy plans to deploy a network of high-speed, real-time satellite ground stations.
    • The $16 million will support expansion and the launch of Skynopy’s AKAR project, aimed at revolutionising orbital connectivity by 2028.

What happened: Skynopy secures $16M to expand ground station network

Skynopy, a French NewSpace startup, raised $16 million to grow its satellite ground station services. This funding round was completed in just one month. Investors in this round included Alven, Expansion, Omnes, and CNES through the SpaceFounders programme. Heartcore, a European fund that had already invested in Skynopy, also joined this funding round. Skynopy aims to establish a network of ground stations that provide real-time data downlink services for satellites, particularly those focused on Earth observation.

The company was founded in late 2023 and has already deployed more than 15 antennas in its network. It has also partnered with companies like AWS and Kinéis to expand its reach. This investment will enable Skynopy to rapidly establish a global network of antennas, enabling it to compete with other companies that have taken years to set up similar systems. The funding will be used to support commercial deployment and strengthen the technical and marketing teams.

    Why it’s important

Skynopy offers a more affordable way for satellite operators to access ground stations. Traditionally, owning and maintaining ground stations requires significant investment. This can be too expensive for smaller companies. Skynopy’s service eliminates the need for these high upfront costs. Satellite operators can now pay for ground station use only when they need it. This makes the service more flexible and cost-effective for companies with varying data needs.

The company uses a hybrid approach, combining third-party infrastructure with its own antennas. It also uses software orchestration and virtualised modem technologies to improve data transmission. This setup helps increase the amount of data that can be downloaded during each satellite pass. For satellite operators who need to download a lot of data, such as from Earth observation satellites, Skynopy’s service can double their data download capacity without additional costs. For companies with smaller data needs, it can lower their overall costs. This could change how satellite data is managed, making it easier for companies to access the information they need faster and more cheaply.
