  • Qualcomm to enhance IoT offerings with Edge Impulse’s AI platform
  • Integration with Dragonwing processors to accelerate edge AI adoption

What happened: Qualcomm strengthens AI and IoT portfolio

At Embedded World, Qualcomm Technologies announced its plans to acquire Edge Impulse, a leading AI development platform provider. This strategic move will enhance Qualcomm’s AI and IoT capabilities, solidifying its leadership in edge computing. The acquisition supports Qualcomm’s broader IoT strategy, which focuses on an advanced chipset roadmap, a unified software architecture, extensive developer resources, and a comprehensive suite of services designed to tackle industry challenges.

Edge Impulse’s platform, used by over 170,000 developers, enables the creation, deployment, and monitoring of AI models on edge devices such as microcontrollers and AI-accelerated processors. The platform features a user-friendly, low-code interface that supports data collection, model training, deployment, and monitoring. Its applications span asset tracking, anomaly detection, predictive maintenance, and computer vision-based solutions.

Following the acquisition, Qualcomm plans to integrate Edge Impulse’s platform with its Dragonwing processors. These processors deliver exceptional on-device AI inferencing, computer vision, and graphics performance. By leveraging Qualcomm AI Hub, the integration aims to improve AI model efficiency, potentially quadrupling inference performance while reducing model size and memory usage. Initially, the Dragonwing QCS6490 and QCS5430 processors will support the integration, with plans to expand to more industrial and embedded IoT processors in the future.

Why it is important:

Qualcomm’s acquisition of Edge Impulse marks a significant step in accelerating edge AI adoption across industries. By combining Edge Impulse’s AI tools with Qualcomm’s advanced hardware and software ecosystem, developers will gain enhanced capabilities to build and deploy AI models on edge devices. This collaboration is expected to simplify the development process, reduce latency, and improve data privacy, making edge AI more accessible and efficient.

The move underscores the growing importance of edge computing in IoT applications, where real-time processing and reduced reliance on cloud infrastructure are becoming critical. Qualcomm’s acquisition positions the company to address diverse industry needs and challenges, further strengthening its leadership in AI and IoT. As demand for AI-enabled devices continues to grow, this partnership is poised to drive innovation and expand the potential of edge AI across sectors such as retail, security, healthcare, and energy.
