OpenAI uses Apple’s data centres to serve ChatGPT on iPhones

    • OpenAI relies on Apple’s private cloud infrastructure to process ChatGPT queries on iOS devices.
    • The partnership underscores a growing trend of AI models running across a blend of on-device and cloud setups.

What happened: Apple uses its own servers to run ChatGPT for iPhone users

OpenAI is using Apple’s own data centre infrastructure to process ChatGPT queries on iPhones. The collaboration is part of a broader partnership where ChatGPT is integrated into Apple’s iOS 18, macOS Sequoia and iPadOS 18 operating systems via the Apple Intelligence framework. Rather than relying solely on OpenAI’s Microsoft Azure-hosted servers, Apple is routing data through its private data centres to process user prompts with OpenAI’s GPT-4o model.

Apple describes this setup as “Private Cloud Compute,” designed to protect user privacy by keeping sensitive queries off external systems. When a request cannot be processed on the device itself, it is routed through Apple’s servers where OpenAI’s model performs the task. Apple reportedly declined to use Microsoft Azure for this implementation, preferring a more contained and controllable infrastructure.

    Why this is important

This arrangement signals a shift in how AI services are being deployed on consumer devices. Apple’s insistence on controlling the compute environment while using OpenAI’s model suggests a desire to balance innovation with its strict privacy standards. It also shows OpenAI’s willingness to separate from its primary cloud provider, Microsoft, and work with tech rivals under specific conditions.

The decision adds pressure to cloud providers and chipmakers as AI integration demands hybrid infrastructure. For example, Google’s Gemini and Meta’s Llama models are designed to run both in the cloud and on-device, reflecting a similar direction. As Ben Bajarin, CEO at Creative Strategies, noted, “This hybrid approach may become standard as companies seek to optimise latency, privacy and compute efficiency.”

Apple has yet to publicly confirm how many data centres or how much infrastructure is dedicated to the ChatGPT integration. But as AI features expand, the tech giant’s role as both a hardware provider and an AI deployment partner could reshape industry dynamics.
