  • Ooredoo and ASN to build a submarine cable connecting seven Gulf nations.
  • FIG project aims to enhance regional and global connectivity.

What Happened: Ooredoo and ASN partner to build a submarine cable linking seven Gulf nations with Europe.

Ooredoo Group has signed an agreement with Alcatel Submarine Networks (ASN) to construct a state-of-the-art submarine cable system, called Fibre in Gulf (FIG), connecting seven nations in the Gulf region. The system will link Qatar, Oman, the UAE, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Iraq, with the primary goal of strengthening regional connectivity. In addition to enhancing internal communication within the Gulf, the new cable will establish a direct connection between the Gulf and Europe, offering a more efficient route for data traffic between the two regions. The project is set to improve digital infrastructure across the Gulf and is expected to support the region’s expanding digital economy.

Why It’s Important

The Fibre in Gulf (FIG) project is crucial for improving Gulf region digital connectivity. It will streamline communication among member countries and provide a direct link to Europe. This will reduce latency and improve data transfer speeds. As digital services grow, the new infrastructure will support local and international businesses. Better connectivity will help build a more resilient and sustainable digital economy. Increased data capacity and reliable connections will meet the rising demand for high-speed internet and cloud services.
