What happened: ICANN seeks Chair and Chair-Elect for 2026 NomCom

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has officially announced a call for expressions of interest for the positions of Chair and Chair-Elect for the 2026 Nominating Committee (NomCom). This announcement comes as part of ICANN’s ongoing efforts to ensure effective leadership in its governance structure. Interested candidates are encouraged to submit their expressions of interest before the deadline of 30 June 2025.

The NomCom plays a critical role in the ICANN ecosystem, responsible for selecting individuals to serve on the ICANN Board of Directors and other key positions within the organisation. The Chair and Chair-Elect will lead the committee through a crucial period as it prepares for significant decisions impacting the future of global internet governance. This process is particularly important given the evolving landscape of internet policies and the increasing need for diverse representation within ICANN.

In the announcement, ICANN emphasised the importance of leadership qualities, including a deep understanding of the organisation’s mission, experience in consensus-building, and the ability to engage with a wide range of stakeholders. The selected individuals will be expected to guide the NomCom in its efforts to enhance transparency and inclusiveness in the selection process.

Significance of the NomCom leadership roles

The call for expressions of interest for the ICANN 2026 NomCom Chair and Chair-Elect is significant as it underscores the necessity for robust leadership in internet governance. The NomCom is tasked with making crucial appointments that affect the direction and effectiveness of ICANN, an organisation central to the management of internet resources globally. The leadership positions are vital for ensuring that diverse perspectives are represented in decision-making processes.

Moreover, the emphasis on consensus-building and stakeholder engagement reflects the increasing complexity of internet governance, where multiple interests and viewpoints must be considered. As the digital landscape evolves, the ability to navigate these complexities becomes even more critical. The selection of capable leaders for the NomCom will play a pivotal role in shaping policies that govern the internet, impacting millions of users and organisations worldwide.

Furthermore, the transparency and inclusiveness of the selection process are essential for maintaining trust in ICANN’s governance. By opening up the nomination process, ICANN aims to foster greater participation from a wider array of stakeholders, which is crucial for addressing the challenges facing the internet today.
