What happened: APNIC at TWNOG 6.0 in Taipei

APNIC actively participated in the sixth Taiwan Network Operators Group (TWNOG 6.0) meeting in Taipei, held from 15 to 18 April 2025. Over 300 network professionals attended the event, which covered a variety of topics, including AI, cloud networking, DNS/DNSSEC, and key Internet protocols.

At the event, APNIC set up a booth where it provided attendees with detailed information on IP resources, membership benefits, and the WHOIS database. APNIC also conducted a three-day BGP workshop, delivered in Mandarin, which had 22 participants. During the event, Makito Lay gave a Lightning Talk encouraging the TWNOG community to actively participate in the ongoing ICP-2 consultation, a process aimed at gathering community input on critical Internet policy matters.

    Why it’s important

TWNOG 6.0 served as an important platform for APNIC to connect with Taiwan’s network operators. The event’s focus on emerging topics like AI and cloud networking reflects the growing significance of these technologies in shaping the future of Internet infrastructure. However, one must consider whether such regional forums can truly drive systemic change, especially given the increasingly complex landscape of global Internet governance.

The BGP workshop proved to be a valuable learning opportunity, providing technical education on a critical Internet protocol. While such workshops can enhance the skills of local professionals, it remains to be seen whether these educational initiatives are enough to address the broader, more pressing challenges in the Internet governance space. Are these events contributing to real change, or do they primarily offer a space for networking and knowledge-sharing within a niche community?
