Vodafone names Microsoft executive Pilar Lopez as new CFO

    • Lopez led Microsoft’s partnership with the London Stock Exchange Group.
    • Her experience in both telecoms and tech makes her a strong fit for the role.

What happened: Microsoft’s Pilar Lopez to take over as Vodafone CFO

Vodafone Group has appointed Pilar López as its new Chief Financial Officer (CFO), a role she will officially assume on 1 December 2025. She will replace Luka Mucic, who is leaving the company at the end of November this year. Lopez comes to Vodafone from Microsoft, where she held several senior roles, including Chief Operating Officer for Western Europe. She was also in charge of leading Microsoft’s partnership with the London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG). Before joining Microsoft, Lopez spent 16 years at Telefonica, the Spanish telecom giant, where she held various leadership and finance roles.

Vodafone’s CEO, Margherita Della Valle, highlighted Lopez’s extensive experience across the telecoms and technology industries. She said Lopez has the right skills to guide Vodafone through its ongoing transformation. Lopez’s previous roles in Microsoft and Telefonica give her a broad understanding of both sectors, which Vodafone sees as valuable for the company’s future growth. The appointment comes as Vodafone is changing, including cutting jobs and adjusting its market focus to improve profits. Mucic has been working on cost-cutting measures and plans to separate Vodafone’s tower business, Vantage Towers, as part of a broader restructuring effort.

    Why it’s important

Lopez’s appointment is important because Vodafone is looking for a leader who can help the company as it shifts towards digital services. Her background in both telecommunications and technology makes her well-suited to help Vodafone adapt to a changing market. She has experience in managing partnerships with other big companies, which will help Vodafone grow its business in the digital space. Lopez’s expertise could play a key role in Vodafone’s goal to expand its enterprise services, which involve providing more technology solutions to businesses rather than just individual customers.

Vodafone’s choice of Lopez shows that the company is looking for someone who can lead the company through its transition to a more digital-focused future. Many European telecom firms are choosing leaders from the tech industry to help them adapt to these changes. Lopez’s work with Microsoft and LSEG is a good example of the kind of projects that Vodafone wants to pursue. She will bring a fresh perspective to Vodafone, especially as it looks for new ways to increase revenue from its business customers.
