Vodafone and Ericsson utilize AI to enhance 5G energy efficiency

  • Vodafone UK and Ericsson have collaborated on a trial to improve the energy efficiency of Vodafone’s 5G network using artificial intelligence (AI).
  • The trial resulted in up to a 33% reduction in daily power consumption of 5G radio units at certain sites in London.

What happened: Vodafone and Ericsson use AI to improve 5G energy efficiency

Vodafone UK and Ericsson conducted a trial to enhance 5G network energy efficiency using artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML). The trial tested multiple AI-powered features, including 5G Deep Sleep, which reduces power usage by 70% during low-traffic periods, and 4G Cell Sleep Mode Orchestration, which optimizes 4G energy consumption. Additionally, a Radio Power Efficiency Heatmap was used to analyze and predict energy consumption, allowing targeted efficiency improvements. These measures helped reduce the daily power consumption of 5G radio units by up to 33% at select sites in London. By integrating AI-driven automation, Vodafone aims to lower operational costs and carbon emissions while maintaining network performance. The trial highlights how AI can play a crucial role in making telecommunications networks more sustainable and energy-efficient.
