What happened: SatCo JV to bring satellite broadband to smartphones

Vodafone and AST SpaceMobile formed a 50/50 joint venture called SatCo. They chose Luxembourg for the headquarters. SatCo will offer satellite direct‑to‑device (D2D) mobile broadband. It targets operators across 21 EU states and other European markets . The service will integrate small earth stations with 4G and 5G networks.

This setup gives backhaul support and coverage for remote regions. The JV plans to launch commercial services in 2026 . The move follows earlier groundwork by AST SpaceMobile and Vodafone. They tested 4G and 5G calls from rural phone handsets via satellites. These demos showed download speeds over 20 Mbps on unmodified smartphones.

Why it’s important

SatCo addresses gaps in mobile coverage across Europe. It helps operators reach remote or maritime areas. It supports Europe’s Digital Decade 2030 goals. It also strengthens digital sovereignty with EU‑based infrastructure. The D2D approach removes the need for special satellite phones. Users get seamless mobile broadband on normal devices.

This may cut blackspots and improve emergency connectivity. It also shows how mobile and satellite networks can collaborate. Operators now see satellite as a complement to 4G/5G. This move may set a new standard for network resilience and reach.
