What happened: Virgin Media O2 introduces 5G Standalone for business customers

Virgin Media O2 has launched its 5G Standalone network for enterprise, public sector, and SME customers across the UK. The new network, available at no extra cost, offers enhanced coverage, higher bandwidth, and lower latency. The upgrade is accessible to business customers in 500 towns and cities, with eligible tariffs and compatible devices benefiting from the improved network.

The 5G Standalone network is fully cloud-based, unlike previous 5G services that relied on 4G infrastructure. This allows for innovations such as autonomous transport, remote healthcare, and robotic factories. The upgrade also supports network slicing, offering future opportunities for industries like augmented reality and gaming. The move is part of Virgin Media O2’s larger investment in its mobile network, which now covers 75% of the UK population with 5G.

    Why it’s Important

The launch of 5G Standalone for businesses marks a key milestone for Virgin Media O2. It enables businesses across the UK to leverage next-generation connectivity, facilitating innovations in industries like healthcare, transport, and manufacturing. The new network’s cloud-based architecture improves reliability, providing a more stable and scalable solution for growing business needs. This upgrade aligns with the UK government’s goal to have 5G Standalone coverage in all populated areas by 2030.

The network also helps Virgin Media O2 meet its sustainability targets, using energy-efficient technology to reduce emissions. With businesses facing economic challenges, this technological upgrade will support enhanced productivity and mobility, offering a competitive edge in an increasingly digital landscape.
