    • A study by IDC, commissioned by Expereo, surveyed 650 technology leaders across Europe, the US, and Asia-Pacific.
    • 88% believe AI will be important in achieving business goals over the next year.

What happened: UK tech leaders caution boards against overestimating AI capabilities

A recent study by IDC, commissioned by Expereo, reveals that nearly 40% of UK technology leaders believe their boards have unrealistic expectations regarding AI’s impact on business performance. The survey, which included 650 technology leaders from Europe, the US, and Asia-Pacific, found that while 88% see AI as crucial for meeting business goals in the coming year, 26% feel that expectations are outpacing their teams’ capacity to deliver.

In the UK specifically, only 14% of businesses report that AI has underperformed, whereas 64% recognize its benefits. This disparity suggests a need for better alignment between board-level expectations and the practical capabilities of AI technologies.

    Why it’s important

The findings highlight a growing disconnect between corporate boards and technology leaders regarding AI’s potential. While enthusiasm for AI is high, unrealistic expectations can lead to strategic missteps and resource misallocation.Ensuring that board members have a grounded understanding of AI’s capabilities and limitations is essential for effective decision-making and long-term success.
