  • Huawei and Samsung are leading the charge in trifold smartphone innovation.
  • Trifold devices offer three displays, aiming to enhance user experience and functionality.

What happened: Trifold smartphone innovations at MWC

At the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, Huawei and Samsung showcased their trifold smartphones, signaling a new wave of innovation in the mobile industry. Huawei launched its Mate XT, a €3,499/$3,678 smartphone with three screens, while Samsung revealed two concept devices, the Flex G and Flex S. These devices highlight the companies’ efforts to move beyond the traditional bar-shaped smartphone form factor and offer more immersive and versatile user experiences.

Samsung’s Flex G features three screens that fold inwards and outwards, resembling a book, while the Flex S has a zigzag-like shape, intended to resemble an “S”. These concept devices, although not yet available for purchase, indicate the direction smartphone makers are taking towards innovation and design.

Why it’s important

The introduction of trifold smartphones is significant as it represents a shift in smartphone design and functionality. These devices aim to provide more screen real estate for multitasking and enhanced media consumption, potentially reshaping how users interact with their phones.

The focus on innovative form factors also indicates an industry push to differentiate products in a market becoming increasingly characterized by a “sea of sameness”. As companies like Huawei and Samsung continue to invest in such technologies, consumers can expect to see more trifold options hitting the market, offering premium experiences at a higher cost。
