    • Telia trials hydrogen energy to enhance mobile site resilience.
    • Aims to increase backup power duration significantly during outages.

What happened: Telia’s hydrogen power initiative

Telia, a leading telecommunications operator, has announced the trial of hydrogen power for its mobile sites, marking a significant step towards sustainable and resilient energy solutions. The trials are set to take place outside Stockholm, Sweden, and are expected to demonstrate the potential of hydrogen, fuel cells, solar cells, and batteries to extend backup power duration from a few hours to an impressive 110 days. This initiative is in line with Telia’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and enhancing the reliability of its network infrastructure.

    Why it is important

The trial of hydrogen power at Telia’s mobile sites is crucial for several reasons. Firstly, it addresses the need for more sustainable energy sources in the telecommunications industry, which is increasingly looking towards renewable energy to reduce its environmental impact. Secondly, the extended backup power duration provided by hydrogen energy can significantly improve network resilience during power outages, ensuring continuous connectivity for customers even in the face of disruptions. This is particularly important in regions where network reliability is critical for both civilian and defense needs. The project, which is financed by the Swedish Post & Telecom Authority and involves key industry partners such as Euromekanik, Powercell, Polarium, and Soltech, is set to conclude in December 2025. It highlights Telia’s role in driving innovation in sustainable energy use within the telecom industry and supports the global transition towards a net-zero society.
