  • O2 Telefónica Germany signs five-year deal with Mavenir.
  • Transition to cloud-native IMS for enhanced 4G/5G performance.

What happened: Telefónica Germany enhances network with Mavenir’s cloud-native IMS solution for 4G and 5G

O2 Telefónica Germany has signed a five-year contract with Mavenir to transition from its existing virtualised IMS (vIMS) to a cloud-native IMS solution, supporting both 4G and 5G services. This agreement extends the companies’ long-term partnership and includes both fixed and mobile IMS networks, impacting the entire subscriber base of O2 Telefónica Germany.

The move to Mavenir’s cloud-native IMS platform is part of Telefónica’s broader strategy to enhance its mobile network capabilities, enabling support for voice over LTE (VoLTE) and voice over New Radio (VoNR). The new platform also allows seamless voice continuity between 4G and 5G networks. With deployment as stateless microservices in containers, Mavenir’s solution operates on both public and private clouds, ensuring rapid innovation and the quick rollout of new services.

Why it’s important

The shift to Mavenir’s cloud-native IMS is a crucial step in O2 Telefónica’s ongoing network evolution. With the need for more flexible and scalable network solutions increasing, this transition marks a significant move towards improving service quality for both residential and business customers. The upgrade will enhance the performance of 4G and 5G services, while supporting critical features like VoLTE and VoNR. Moreover, it aligns with Telefónica’s larger goals of leveraging cloud technologies and automation to create new business opportunities. This deal also sets a precedent for further adoption of virtualised and cloud-native technologies in the telecom industry.

Mavenir’s solution not only improves network performance but also accelerates digital transformation, offering operators like O2 Telefónica the flexibility to innovate faster. This is vital as telecoms increasingly rely on software-based solutions to deliver next-gen mobile experiences and respond to growing customer demands in the 5G era.
