What happened

CityFibre has announced a strategic long-term partnership with Sky to broaden its network reach. Starting next year, Sky’s Full Fibre Broadband will be available on CityFibre’s infrastructure, ultimately extending to over 1.3 million homes located in challenging areas.

This initiative aligns with CityFibre’s commitment to the Government’s Project Gigabit Programme. Serving 3.8 million premises currently, CityFibre aims to expand to at least eight million in the coming years. Amber Pine, Sky’s managing director of connectivity, highlighted the benefits of providing fast, reliable broadband to more households across the UK.

Additionally, CityFibre plans to upgrade its network to support 10Gbps XGS-PON technology, enhancing its offerings for ISP partners.

Why it’s important

The announcement of the partnership between CityFibre and Sky represents a crucial development in the UK’s broadband landscape. By aiming to extend broadband access to underserved communities, this collaboration not only addresses connectivity gaps but also contributes to the government’s broader digital infrastructure goals.

The plan to upgrade to 10Gbps technology further positions both companies as leaders in the industry, catering to growing consumer demands for high-speed internet. This partnership is likely to enhance competition in the telecommunications market while ensuring that more households receive reliable and affordable broadband services, fostering economic growth and improved quality of life.
