What happened: Hyperscale data centres drive digital transformation in Greece

Data centre operator Serverfarm and Greece’s Independent Power Transmission Operator (IPTO) have announced a joint venture, Gemini, to construct hyperscale data centres across the country. The collaboration begins with a 130MW campus in the Greater Athens Area, which is positioned as the foundation for further expansions nationwide. The facilities are designed to serve cloud providers, content networks, and enterprises, addressing Greece’s growing demand for digital infrastructure.

Serverfarm CEO Avner Papouchado emphasises the country’s strategic geographic position as a digital gateway between continents, while IPTO CEO Manos Manousakis highlights Gemini’s potential to revolutionise Greece’s telecommunications and data economy. Gemini’s energy-efficient designs aim to leverage advanced cooling systems and renewable energy sources. IPTO will provide sustainable and reliable power, ensuring that Greece can cater to hyperscale customers while advancing its digital landscape.

Why it’s important

This collaboration marks a significant milestone in Greece’s push to become a digital and data-driven economy. With its strategic position bridging Europe, Asia, and Africa, Greece is uniquely placed to serve as a connectivity hub for global enterprises.

The Gemini project also aligns with sustainability goals by integrating renewable energy and efficient cooling systems, contributing to greener digital infrastructure. By catering to hyperscale data demands, the initiative could attract global tech giants to establish regional bases in Greece, fostering economic growth and boosting Greece’s competitive edge in the European digital market.

It highlights how public-private partnerships, like that of Serverfarm and IPTO, can address infrastructure gaps and support technological advancements in emerging markets.
