What happened: Nokia to enhance Vodafone Idea’s optical network

Nokia has announced plans to upgrade and expand Vodafone Idea‘s optical transport network across key metropolitan and regional locations in India. This initiative aims to support the growth of 4G services and prepare the network for future demands, including the rollout of 5G technology. The upgrade will involve deploying Nokia’s advanced optical solutions to increase network capacity and efficiency. Vodafone Idea’s Chief Technology Officer, Jagbir Singh, stated that these enhancements align with the company’s goal to improve customer experience and ensure robust network readiness for upcoming demands.

Why it’s important

The collaboration between Nokia and Vodafone Idea is part of a broader ₹30,000 crore network expansion plan involving multiple vendors. This upgrade is expected to significantly enhance Vodafone Idea’s network capacity, supporting the increasing demand for 4G data services and facilitating the transition to 5G technology. By modernising the optical transport network, Vodafone Idea aims to provide improved customer experiences and contribute to India’s digital transformation efforts.
