    • Nokia and SK Broadband collaborate to implement a quantum-secure network for Korea Hydro and Nuclear Plant (KHNP), enhancing its protection against advanced cyber threats, including those from quantum computing.
    • The project integrates Nokia’s Quantum-Safe Network solutions and MACsec cryptographic technology, significantly improving the security and reliability of South Korea’s critical energy infrastructure.

What happened: Nokia and SK Broadband secure KHNP network

Nokia and SK Broadband have teamed up to create a quantum-secure network for Korea Hydro and Nuclear Plant (KHNP), boosting its cyber defences. The project, completed in August 2024, shields KHNP’s IP/MPLS network from current and future threats, including those posed by quantum computing. Nokia’s Quantum-Safe Network solutions, which employ a multi-layered cryptographic approach, form the backbone of this initiative. The deployment includes state-of-the-art equipment, routers, and service systems, streamlined by Nokia Network Services Platform (NSP).

Kim Gooyoung from SK Broadband emphasised the significance of integrating Nokia’s Quantum-Safe MACsec technology, stating it would bolster South Korea’s energy infrastructure security. He highlighted the importance of quantum-safe networks in today’s evolving cyber landscape. Nokia’s Jay Han underscored the necessity of robust protections in the face of quantum computing’s impact on cyber threats. He stated that Nokia’s expertise in quantum-safe technology is aiding companies like KHNP in securing their systems against cyber disruptions and attacks. The partnership with SK Broadband aims to extend the adoption of quantum-safe technology across Korea.

    Why it is important

The collaboration between Nokia and SK Broadband is crucial for enhancing the security of Korea Hydro and Nuclear Plant (KHNP). As cyber threats evolve, particularly with the rise of quantum computing, traditional security measures may no longer suffice. This quantum-secure network protects KHNP’s vital IP/MPLS infrastructure from both current and emerging risks. Implementing Nokia’s Quantum-Safe Network solutions introduces advanced cryptographic techniques, ensuring robust protection. This initiative not only safeguards essential energy systems but also sets a precedent for other critical infrastructures in South Korea.

As Kim Gooyoung noted, integrating quantum-safe technology significantly strengthens national energy security. Furthermore, Jay Han emphasised that adopting these advanced protections is essential in today’s digital landscape. Overall, this partnership exemplifies proactive measures to counteract sophisticated cyber threats, ensuring the resilience and reliability of South Korea’s energy infrastructure for the future.
