    • The world’s longest subsea cable to span over 50,000 km
    • Project aims to enhance global digital infrastructure

What happened: Meta’s ambitious Project Waterworth

Meta has unveiled its latest venture, Project Waterworth. It will be the world’s longest and highest-capacity subsea cable. Spanning over 50,000 km, the cable will exceed the Earth’s circumference. The project will link five major continents, including the U.S., India, Brazil, and South Africa. This will provide unmatched connectivity to these regions.

The cable aims to strengthen global digital infrastructure. It will also support economic cooperation, digital inclusion, and technological development. In India, the project will help drive digital growth, advancing the country’s digital economy. Meta’s subsea cables are critical in carrying over 95% of intercontinental data. These cables support essential services, such as communication, video streaming, and online transactions.

The project will create three new high-speed, high-capacity oceanic corridors. These are essential for the global expansion of AI technologies. Project Waterworth follows Meta’s tradition of subsea cable innovation. It will feature state-of-the-art designs for durability and rapid deployment.

    Why it’s important

Meta’s Project Waterworth is set to transform global connectivity by creating three new oceanic corridors that will significantly enhance the digital infrastructure. Subsea cables like this one are vital for carrying the bulk of intercontinental data, facilitating communication, entertainment, and financial transactions worldwide. The new cable will also support the global demand for faster and more reliable data transmission, which is essential for the growth of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence.

The project’s scale, spanning five continents and over 50,000 km, highlights the growing need for robust digital highways that can handle the increasing volume of global data. In addition, the new cable’s design includes 24 fibre pairs, doubling the capacity of typical systems, which will ensure it can meet future demands. Meta’s investment in such a groundbreaking project reinforces the importance of subsea cables in powering the global digital economy.
